Curiosity > Passion

There’s an excellent Twitter thread from Ed Solomon (one of the writers of the Bill and Ted movies, among other things) about how curiosity is a better goal for the professional writer than passion.

Two takeaways here:

  1. This advice applies to more than just writing screenplays. “Passion” is an unrealistic expectation — and a lot of people only discover what they’re passionate about by trying out things that don’t initially inspire passion. You can always find something to be curious about and see where it takes you.
  2. Professionals in a wide range of creative fields talk shop on Twitter. Following them can help you replace your assumptions about their jobs with more reality-based information.
